The International Canoe Federation is steadfast in its confidence that Poznan will deliver a fantastic Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Cup later this month.
Poland has been experiencing a drought caused by a lack of rainfall since the beginning of the year.
The situation has resulted in low water levels in the River Cybina, which is used to fill Lake Malta, where canoeing competition takes place.
Every four years, the artificial lake is drained to clean the lakebed before being refilled as part of routine maintenance to ensure the best conditions possible for paddlers.
Despite the drought, the work has successfully been carried out with the water depth meeting the ICF’s minimum requirement of two metres under all lanes.
The water depth is normally around 3.7 metres, which is expected to be restored in September, ensuring normal levels will be set for next year’s ICF Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Championships.
The ICF is happy that all technical requirements have been met for Poznan to hold the Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Cup from May 22 to 25.
The ICF remains in constant contact with the Host Organising Committee and the Polish Canoe Association as preparations continue as planned for this month’s much-anticipated World Cup.
The drought which Poznan is experiencing has led to a shortage of water in the River Cybina, but the ICF is pleased to hear that Lake Malta has met the required water levels to hold our World Cup.
The overall look of the course might not be at its usual pristine best, but we all need to accept working with the environmental challenges that we experience from time to time.
Poznan is a vastly experienced organiser, delivering top-class canoeing events year after year, and the ICF has full confidence that they will produce another great spectacle for athletes and spectators alike.
