The stage is set for the International Canoe Federation Stand-Up Paddle World Ranking Series’ opening event in Comacchio, Italy.

Poised to begin on 27 March, the Spring SUP Race promises to be a thrilling start to the global competition calendar, as 350 athletes from 26 nations are confirmed to compete.

Spain brings a strong roster, including four-time world champion Esperanza Barreras and multiple world medallists Alba Alonso Frey and Manuel Hoyuela.

Adding to the elite field, 2024 world sprint champion Andrii Kraitor of Bulgaria will be in attendance, as well as Dutch paddler Donato Freens, the 2025 ICF SUP World Ranking Series winner in long distance and technical.

Notable paddlers also will be representing Italy on home waters, including 17-year-old three-time junior world champion Claudia Postiglione, alongside siblings Cecilia Pampinella and Tommaso Pampinella.

As the first stop of the series, Comacchio carries added importance, offering an early opportunity for athletes to build momentum in the rankings while continuing to strengthen Italy’s role in the development of SUP.

“We are very excited that the Spring SUP Race in Comacchio will open the 2026 SUP World Ranking Series season,” said Noemi Horvath, Chair of the ICF SUP Commission.

“Comacchio is a fantastic venue to launch the season, bringing together a strong international field.

“This first event is key for setting the tone of the 2026 season and building early momentum in the series.

“We are expecting highly competitive racing and a great atmosphere on site.”

Simone Tugnoli Peron, Race Director of the Spring SUP Race, echoed the enthusiasm surrounding the event.

“We are very excited for this ninth edition and despite numerous difficulties in travelling in this period, many athletes have still decided to be present at this opening race of the International Canoe Federation circuit and international races,” he said.

Horvath added: “It is very positive to see Italy continuing to play a central role in the development of international SUP, including hosting future major events such as the World Championships from 14 to 18 October 2026.”
