The 2025 Asian Canoe Confederation Canoe Sprint Asian Championships in Nanchang, China saw the successful conclusion of a seminar for the International Technical Officials (ITOs).

Led by Alison Harris, International Canoe Federation Canoe Sprint Committee Member and Chief Judge at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, 16 ITOs passed their final assessment.

The candidates were from China, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Macau and Kazakhstan.

The seminar had two online assessments on the ICF Statutes and Canoe Sprint.

After they passed that, the final practical component was held at the Yaohu International Aquatic Sports Centre.

“The candidates are of a very good level. I always recommend them to start at the continental level before making the switch to ICF events,” Harris said.

“They have all been very keen, asking questions and staying involved. They are moving ahead in Asia, as this is the third seminar held on the continent.

“It shows they want more ITOs. The venue here has been perfect for learning for the candidates, and it has been a positive experience doing this seminar here.”

During the practical session, the candidates got a taste of various aspects with the course umpires, learning what they do, and procedures at the finish tower and how the equipment works, boat control, weights of boats, and more.

“It is important to develop the skills of the ITOs in Asia. If we look at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, there was significant growth in many areas from Asia, and we need to add ITOs to the list,” ICF Canoe Sprint Committee Chair Toshi Furuya said.

“Every candidate here had a good desire to complete the test. A special thanks to Alison and ACC for helping ensure the smooth functioning of the process in Nanchang.”
