Wild Water legend Weber to bow out after World Cup finals this weekend

More than 120 athletes from 14 nations will gather in southern Bavaria this weekend for the International Wild Water World Cup final, which will include the final international appearance of Wild Water legend Normen Weber.

Most of the medal-winners from this year's Wild Water Racing European Championship in Skopje will be competing, with 123 starters for Saturday's sprint race on the "Eiskanal", the Olympic course from 1972.

For the Classic races the organizing team of Kanu Schwaben Augsburg has selected a 4800 meter long section of the river Lech between Landsberg und Kaufering, about 30 kilometers south of Augsburg. 120 starters have signed up for those races, which has prompted the organizing committee to move up the start of the race to 10 a.m.

Athletes will start just a few metres below the scenic weir on the edge of the old part of the city of Landsberg. In its center, on the historic Hauptplatz, medal ceremonies will be held starting 14 p.m.

This World Cup Final will also be the last international Wild Water Racing Competition for Germany's Normen Weber. The 2013 World Champion, whose list of medals (in Classic and Sprint, single and team) include, among others, three World Championships, six European Championships and gold medals in six Overall World Cups  (Gesamt-Weltcup-Sieger), has announced that he will withdraw from the international White Water Racing circuit.

“I had made up my mind to do that definitely this year”, he explained to the “Augsburger Allgemeine” newspaper, and he is glad that he can give his farewell appearance in the international circuit in a World Cup Final organized by his own club Kanu Schwaben Augsburg.

Just in the last two weeks Normen Weber has demonstrated his outstanding capabilities in Wild Water Racing. In the German Championship he finished first in four races – and in Muotathal he finished third in C1M Classic and C2M Classic (with Rene Brücker). He certainly will do everything to leave his mark in his last Wild Water Racing World Cup Final – admittedly against a very strong competition.
