The canoe sprint venue will remain at the Sea Forest venue in Tokyo at the heart of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games after fears of the venue moving to Miyagi prefecture, 400 kilometres away are squashed.

Representatives of the International Olympic Committee, Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee and Japan's central and city governments have been discussing ways of reducing costs, including possibly moving three venues from planned new locations to existing ones – Canoe Sprint and Rowing, Volleyball and Swimming.

The group was established in October after a Tokyo government panel said the Olympics cost could exceed 3 trillion yen ($27 billion) unless drastic cuts were made.

The Tokyo panel had initially proposed moving the canoe sprint and rowing venue, currently planned at the Sea Forest in Tokyo, to Miyagi prefecture, 400 kilometres (250 miles) north of Tokyo due to construction cost concerns. However, a new feasibility study shows the cost could significantly cut following further discussions with all key stakeholders.

"Considering the cost, location and various other factors, we have decided to hold (canoeing and rowing) at the planned Sea Forest site," Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike confirmed.

The main cost saving are the general infrastructure changes with alterations to the original plans for the bridge and sluice gates providing the major savings.

All stakeholders will now turn their attention to the legacy of the venue and look to see how the initial Games time investment can provide a considerable long-term benefit for canoe sprint and rowing.
