The International Canoe Federation and the Chinese city of Hangzhou have announced plans to hold a multi-discipline Super Cup in 2024, featuring four paddling disciplines.

The 2023 ICF-Hangzhou Super Cup will feature canoe sprint, canoe slalom and kayak cross, canoe polo and canoe marathon events over four days of competition, featuring hundreds of athletes from around the globe.

The athletes will compete for almost USD $400,000 in prizemoney.

The event will be one of the major events broadcast under an exciting deal between the ICF and the Chinese Media Group (CMG) which secures a strong digital and linear presence for paddle sport throughout mainland China and Macau.

This event will also be strategically aligned in the ICF major event calendar to celebrate athletes from the Olympic Games Paris 2024, providing a showcase for the latest generation of Olympic stars.

The strong partnership between the ICF and CMG started three months ago, and CCTV has since broadcast more than 60 hours of ICF competition on linear TV, and an additional 23 hours on live stream.

The agreement was signed by Shen Haixiong, President of CMG and ICF President, Thomas Konietzko, in the presence of Zhou Jinqiang, Vice Minister of Sport and Tong Lixin, Director of China Water Sports administration and President of the CCA.

“For the first time after hosting the Asian Games in canoe sprint and canoe slalom, Hangzhou will also have a place on the map of international ICF competitions,” Jin Cheng Long, Director of the Hangzhou Sports department, Hangzhou, said.

Mr Konietzko said the Super Cup will be an exciting addition to the ICF calendar.

“We are delighted with the city's willingness to host this competition on this beautiful site and, with the Asian Games already taking place at the same location, we are proving how important the sustainable use of our sports facilities is to us,” Mr Konietzko said.
