More than 60 participants from 17 countries are taking part in an ICF Paracanoe conference in Stockholm, Swede,n examining competition, rehabilitation and recreational activity.

The three-day conference has attracted guest speakers from all over the world, and will include sessions devoted to strategies to increase recreational participation by people with impairments.

There will be a focus on the equipment that can be used, the considerations that instructors need to be aware of, and the preparations necessary for such a trip.

The conference will hear from five countries who have successful paracanoe development programs – Italy, Japan, UK, Poland and the USA. Each country will share the methods they have used to attract new participants to paracanoe.

There will also be a presentation from Special Olympics Poland, looking at how para canoe/kayak could be used for people with intellectual impairments.

The conference, proudly sponsored by equipment manufacturers Nelo and Plastex, will examine technology development, and will also include a workshop using boats in a swimming pool to sbow rescuing techniques and adaptive equipment.

The effects of kayaking as a rehabilitation method, the development of the evidence-based classification system for paracanoe, and how to test the physical capacities of paracanoe athletes, will all be topics discussed during the conference.
