Stand Up Paddling in Africa received a major boost this week with a demonstration event at the second African Beach Games in Tunisia, and steps taken towards the continent hosting its first SUP championships later this year.

Athletes from ten African national federations took part in a men’s and women’s competition on a technical course, understood to be the first SUP competition held in Africa. The event was watched on by members of the Confederation of African Canoeing, and presidents and secretary-generals from numerous African national Olympic committees.

ICF President, Thomas Konietzko, attended the event and said it was exciting to see the level of interest in the SUP display. He also signed a memorandum of understanding that will see Nigeria host Africa’s first SUP Championships in November.

“Stand Up Paddling continues to grow as a sport and a recreational activity around the world, so it’s fantastic to see it as part of the African Beach Games,” Mr Konietzko said.

“We are also thrilled to have taken steps to lock in Africa’s first SUP championships. Nigeria has signed an MOU to host the African canoe sprint championships and Olympic qualifiers from November 24-26, with the SUP championships straight after.

“Both of these events will be an important next step in the growth of paddle sports in Africa.”

Canoeing will continue this weekend at the African Beach Games with ocean racing as an official part of the event.
