A regular host of International Canoe Federation Canoe Slalom World Cups and World Championships, the legacy of the Serge Olympic Park is only going to get stronger.
After hosting the ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup Final in September 2024, the 2025 season was kick-started at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games venue successfully.
But for all involved in the town of La Seu d'Urgell, there is no time to rest with the best paddlers of the world returning to the venue for the 2027 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships.
“It is one of the best venues, and the legacy of the Olympic Games Barcelona 1992 continues,” Bernardo Alvarez, Sports Minister of Catalonia, said.
“We have a lot of trust in this venue. While major sports events typically take place in Barcelona, we believe not all big events need to happen there.”
The former basketball player was among the crowds to observe the proceedings, interact with the staff at the venue, and understand what can be done for a premium experience come 2027.
With the region also hosting the 2027 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships, Alvarez said that the plan is to make Catalonia an international hub for paddle sports.
“This will add to the legacy,” he added.
To continue the high standard of events and ensure the venue remains at the highest level, Alvarez said the Ministry of Sport will work with the National Sports Council (CSD) to make a strategic investment plan to develop and modernise facilities.
“We are working with CSD, with Madrid and with the Minister of Sport, to make a big investment and improve the venue. It is one of our main plans. We need better facilities, a modern gym, and the latest technologies for our sportsmen,” he said.
Beyond the competition, organisers in La Seu are focused on the broader impact of the events.
“There are three parts to all events,” he said.
“The economic side, which is the most important when we speak with city leaders; then the sustainability and the social dimension — how it can positively impact the local community.
“This is one of the best venues in Catalonia. It is one of the best in the world, and it is very important to grow.”
