The International Canoe Federation is saddened to learn of the passing of Moldovan Kayak-Canoe Federation president, Iacob Buhna.

Mr Buhna had been at the helm of canoeing in Moldova for the past decade. He had recently contracted coronavirus.

Athletes, coaches and sporting officials in Moldova paid tribute to Mr Buhna, who was 62.

“We are sad that we will not be able to evolve at this edition of the Games with him, because we often met and discussed,” Nicolae Juravschi, President of the National Olympic Committee of Moldova and a double Olympic canoe champion, said.

“As fas as canoeing is concerned, the last results that appeared were the result of his work” Moldova National Olympic Committee vice-president, Larisa Popova, said.

“The girls with a great future have appeared. There have been great results in canoeing.”

The International Canoe Federation passes its condolences to Mr Buhna’s family and friends, and the Moldovan canoeing community.
