The International Canoe Federation is saddened to learn of the passing of Romanian kayaker Vasile Dîba who has died at the age of 69. 

Dîba etched his name in Romanian sporting history when he became the first paddler from his country to achieve Olympic gold in kayaking courtesy of his victory in the men’s K1 500 at Montreal 1976. 

That Olympic Games also saw Dîba, who was aged just 22 at the time, clinch bronze in the men’s K1 1000. 

At Moscow 1980, Dîba increased his Olympic medal tally with silver in the men’s K4 1000 and bronze in the men’s K1 500. 

Dîba made his third appearance at the Olympics when he competed at Los Angeles 1984. 

He was also a five-time world champion, claiming two golds in both 1974 and 1977 and another in 1978 as well as two silvers in 1975. 

"Today, Romanian sport has lost another GREAT champion,” a statement from Dinamo Bucharest Sports Club read.

“Dinamo Bucharest Sports Club mourns the passing away of one of the most valuable athletes in the club's history. 

“Born on July 24, 1954, in Jurilovca, Tulcea, Vasile Dîba passed away today at the age of 69.  

“He was one of the most valuable Romanian kayakers, an innate talent, a modest man with a champion character. 

“His sporting record is impressive: four-time Olympic medallist in kayaking (gold and bronze in 1976 in Montreal, silver and bronze in 1980 in Moscow) and five-time world champion.  

“God rest him!  

“Condolences to the family and close ones!”
