The International Canoe Federation’s centenary book has been added to the Olympic Studies Centre’s (OSC) collection and is accessible via its Olympic World Library (OWL).
ICF President Thomas Konietzko handed over the 100-year anniversary book, entitled “A Century of Paddling”, to the International Olympic Committee’s OSC in Lausanne, Switzerland on January 30.
Mr Konietzko was joined by ICF Secretary General Richard Pettit as they were given a tour of the library, where there is a section dedicated to canoeing, and learnt about how important literature on the Olympic Movement and Olympic Games is preserved and catalogued.
As well as a printed copy of the book being made available at the OSC, a digital version has been added to the OWL which aims to ensure that Olympic and sports-related literature is easily accessible online.
A Century of Paddling chronicles the rich history of paddle sports since the ICF was born under its former name Internationale Repräsentantenschaft für Kanusport on January 19, 1924.
The commemorative book is filled with stunning photographs and amazing stories highlighting landmark moments over the past 100 years while showcasing the beauty of the ICF’s 10 disciplines and their connection with nature.
Mr Konietzko said: “It was an honour to handover our 100-year anniversary book to the Olympic Studies Centre, and it will now be accessible to its worldwide users.
“This commemorative book collects cherished photographs and stories from the past century, showcasing how canoeing has developed into a truly global sport.
“It has been an incredible journey, and we are now looking forward to elevating paddle sports to greater heights over the next 100 years.”
Maria Bogner, Head of the OSC, said: “This anniversary book covers the 100-year history and evolution of the ICF in a very engaging and comprehensive manner.
“We are grateful for this new addition, which complements our extensive library collection on paddle sports and all other Olympic sports.
“As centre of reference for Olympic knowledge, we are pleased to be able to preserve and guarantee accessibility to this important publication via the Olympic World Library.”
Balint Vekassy, the ICF’s Global Director of Events, is the Editor-in-Chief of the book which was published in July 2024 ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
