With the deadline for nominations for our Athletes’ Committee set for Monday (July 14), Bridgitte Hartley has issued an open letter to athletes looking back at her time as Chair and outlining the reasons why they should encourage their National Federation to put them forward as a candidate.
Dear Athletes,
As we approach the elections for the ICF Athletes’ Committee, I reflect on my incredible journey as a representative of South Africa in racing Canoe Sprint, Canoe Marathon and Canoe Ocean Racing.
After competing in three Olympic Games and earning an Olympic medal along with several World Cup and World Championship medals, I have transitioned into a coaching role and embraced the responsibilities of chairing the Athletes’ Committee.
This position has allowed me to remain connected to the sport I love while actively contributing to its growth.
Recently, I attended two major events as a non-athlete – Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Cup in Poznan, Poland, and the Canoe Slalom World Cup in La Seu, Spain.
Witnessing such high levels of competition just one year after the Olympic Games Paris 2024 reignited my passion for supporting athletes.
I engaged with competitors, team leaders, and coaches, observing their determination and drive.
Their dedication inspired me to reach out and seek ways for the Athletes’ Committee to better serve all disciplines, ensuring every athlete's voice is heard.
As the election period approaches, we are on the lookout for passionate athletes ready to join us in advocating for better opportunities and support within their disciplines.

During the World Cup events, I had the honour of handing out medals to both male and female athletes, which was an incredibly rewarding experience.
One of my personal highlights was awarding the K1 1000m medals, a category in which I also claimed gold during my paddling career.
This experience reminded me of the importance of celebrating our athletes' achievements and the camaraderie that exists among us.
We have seen significant progress, with our athletes being represented at forums such as the International Athletes’ Forum in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Committee member Sandor Totka from Hungary shared vital insights about the importance of Athletes' Committees in bridging the communication gap between athletes and federations.
