The 2016 ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup returns to Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal for the second year in a row for the final racing in the series of three events.

Fernando Pimenta (POR) was the only Portuguese to win an individual race for the home crowd, when he was victorious in the K1M 1000m and the K1M 5000.

It was Portugal's first victory in an individual World Cup race since 2011.

Pimenta claimed bronze at the 2015 World Championships in K1M 1000m and finished seventh in Duisburg in this event on 21 May.

Portugal also won the K4W 200m last year.

Canada was most successful in Montemor-o-Velho last year, winning four of the 24 World Cup races. New Zealand, Hungary, France and Portugal won three events.

Marcus Gross (GER), Max Rendschmidt (GER), Tom Liebscher (GER), Anastasiya Todorova (UKR), Inna Hryshchun (UKR) and Serhii Tarnovskyi (MDA) were the canoers to win two events last week in Racice.

Rendschmidt has now won a total of 11 World Cup events, most of the six mentioned athletes.

Raman Piatrushenka (BLR) has been on the podium at the World Cup 85 times, most of all canoers since 2001.

Piatrushenka won the K2M 1000m and claimed a third place in the K4M 1000m in Duisburg two weeks ago.

Vadzim Makhnev (BLR) has been on the podium in the World Cup 83 times (since 2001), second most behind Piatrushenka. However, Makhnev's last podium finish was at the World Championships in 2014, finishing third in the K2M 500m.

Inna Osypenko-Radomska (AZE) won the World Cup event in K1W 500m in Racice last week, giving Azerbaijan its first World Cup win in a women's event. She also finished second in K1W 200m in both Duisburg and Racice this season.

Max Hoff (GER) has improved in each of his last three appearances at the K1M 1000m World Cup events: he finished second in Racice in the K1M 1000m after finishing third in this event in Duisburg and fourth at the World Championships last year, which was the last World Cup event of 2015.

His last World Cup victory in this event dates back to 30 May 2015, when he was victorious in Copenhagen.

Since the start of this century, Hoff is tied with Adam Van Koeverden (CAN) on a record 13 World Cup victories in K1M 1000m.

Hoff and Van Koeverden have participated in the same K1M 1000m World Cup event 20 times. Hoff has finished 11 times ahead of Van Koeverden, with the Canadian finishing nine times ahead of the German.

Van Koeverden has won 26 World Cup races in individual events, which is only two shy of the record in this century held by Andreas Dittmar (GER, 28).

Timur Khaidarov (KAZ) won the C1M 200m in Racice, giving Kazakhstan its first individual victory in a men's World Cup event this century.

At 20 years and 62 days, he became the second youngest canoer to win a World Cup race in this event after Andriy Kraytor (AZE/RUS), who was 19 years old in 2012, when he won in Moscow and Poznan.
