Monica Doria has made history by being elected as the first chair of the European Canoe Association’s (ECA) Athletes’ Committee.

The Andorran Canoe Slalom star will be responsible for representing athletes' voice within the ECA’s decision-making bodies.

The 25-year-old will also sit on the ECA Board with voting rights, ensuring that athletes’ perspectives are directly included in the continental governing body’s activities.

“It is a great honour to be elected by my fellow athletes to represent them,” Doria said.

“Together, we will work to make athletes’ voices heard, share our experiences, and contribute to the future of European canoeing.”

Doria and fellow Canoe Slalom paddler Michal Martikan of Slovakia were elected as members of the ECA Athletes’ Committee following the European Championships in Paris, France, this year.

They were joined by Canoe Sprint athletes Frederikke Hauge Matthiesen of Denmark and Josef Dostal of Czechia, and Paracanoe sensation Charlotte Henshaw of Great Britain, who were elected at the Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe European Championships in Racice, Czechia.

Monica Doria won European gold in Paris in 2025

Doria, who is the reigning canoe single European champion, will work to promote the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements, strengthen connections with the National Federations’ Athletes’ Committees, and the International Canoe Federation’s Athletes’ Committee.

She will also support the ECA President during major competitions and events in her new role.

The ECA Athletes' Committee was established following the adoption of its new statutes at the Extraordinary Congress in November 2024.

It marked a major step towards strengthening athlete representation within ECA’s governance, boosting better communication between athletes and the governing body, and helping guide the sport's development across all disciplines.
