World and Olympic Champion Lisa Carrington won the K1W 500m title and her second gold of the ICF Sprint World Cup in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal today.

An explosive start from Emilie Fournel (CAN) put her in the lead until the half way point when Carrington turned on full power.

New Zealander Carrington, who yesterday won the K1 200, crossed the line first today in 1:48.364, over a second and a half ahead of Slovenian Spela Janic who put in a massive effort at the finish to claim silver.

Poland’s Ewelina Wojnarowska won the battle of the Poles to take bronze, earning her place on the team bound for Rio after beating compatriot Anna Pulawska into fifth place.

"I managed to win both K1 200m and 500m so it's been a good week,” said Carrington.  “This weekend we had side winds, head winds and back winds.  You can't always get that and it's great practice.

"There is a lot of stuff I can take out of these two World Cups. It's nice to be able to do what I've done in training but obviously there's so much I can improve on and work on over the next few months leading on to Rio."

K1M 200m
Frenchman Maxime Beaumont arrived at Montemor-o-Velho this week as one of a select few leading athletes who has competed in all three internationals this season

If he was tired then he certainly didn’t show it as he retained the gold medal he won here last summer.

Benefitting from a tail wind today he recorded a time of 34.216, fast enough to beat double World Champion, Mark De Jonge (CAN), by 0.44 seconds.  Carlos Garrote’s (ESP) bronze medal winning time of 34.700 meant the top three men finished within four hundreds of a second of each other.

"I was missing the gold this season, but now it's done I'm pretty satisfied,” said Beaumont, who last week in Racice won the K1 200 bronze.

“Both K2 and K1 are priorities for me and I will work out and train my best to prepare for Rio in the two boats. But now it’s time for some rest before the last training camp for the Games."

C1M 200m
Spurred on by rapturous support from the local crowd, Portugal’s Helder Silva led the C1M 200 from start to finish, crossing the line ahead of last week’s Racice silver medallist Qiang Li of China.

C2M 1000m
It was a Polish shoot out in the C2M 1000 with Piotr Kuleta and Marcin Grzybowski (POL) taking the win over second placed compatriots Mateusz Kaminski and Michal Kudla.

Had Kaminski and Kudla been fastest they would have cemented their place in the Poland team for the Rio Games.

But the two boats now how a win each on Poland’s internal selection process and now need to battle out the decider.

K4M 1000m
In the K4M 1000 final the Czech Republic put on a demonstration of immense power to beat the Australian boat of the versatile and prolific medal winner Kenny Wallace.

Led by Josef Dostál, yesterday’s K1M 1000 gold medallists, the Czechs overtook Australia at the 500m point, increasing their stroke rate in the last 250 to cross the line by a margin of over 2 seconds.

"We got a good rhythm and felt very confident in the race so it went well,” said Dostal. “Hopefully now we are qualified for the Games in Rio"

K4W 500m
Each member of Poland’s K4W  team - Marta Walczykiewicz, Karolina Naja, Edyta Kierkla and Beata Mikolajczyk - had already won medals at this regatta before this morning’s 500m final.  But the highly talented quartet had no plans to ease up at this point.

They flew off the blocks, increasing their lead with every meter of the race final to beat Germany’s Jasmin Fritz, Melanie Gebhardt, Tabea Medert and Nina Krankemann by two seconds. Hungary settled for bronze.

Explaining what makes them so invincible Walczykiewicz said:  "We run a lot, train in the gym and on the water together.

“Now we are focused on both K2 and K4 to be ready for Rio"
