The International Canoe Federation is saddened to learn of the passing of long-time canoeing official and honorary member John Leukemans at the age of 93.

Mr Leukemans was Chair of the ICF Canoe Sprint Committee from 1992 until 2004 when he became an honorary member.

The Belgian official was a long-time Chief Judge and Chief Official at several Olympic Games during his involvement with the ICF.

He also helped with the organisation of numerous international competitions, including ICF Canoe Sprint World Cups and the 1985 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, held in Mechelen, Belgium.

It remains the only time Belgium has staged the World Championships.

Mr Leukemans was also President of Belgian club Antwerp between 1979 and 1997 and was a national Canoe Sprint trainer from 1970 to 1980.

The ICF would like to express sincere condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace.
