Germany’s Peter Weidert and France’s Noic Garioud are both on the verge of completing what only a handful of athletes have managed to do before – sweep all three gold medals at a single stand up paddling world championships.

Weidert in the men’s 50-plus division and Garioud in the open men have both already won SUP sprint and distance gold at the 2023 ICF Sup World Championships in Pattaya, and on Saturday they cruised through the early rounds of the technical races.

Italy’s Cecilia Pampinella was the last athlete to win all three gold at a single championships, sweeping the sprint, distance and technical events in Poland last year in the junior girls competition. Previously Spain’s Duna Gordillo and Daniel Parres have been among just a chosen few who have left world championships with three gold.

Several athletes have won two gold medals at a single ICF world titles, including Garioud in Hungary in 2021, but winning three gold is a much tougher task. Both Weidert and Garioud looked in control of their technical races, but the competition will be tough on Sunday.

Garioud can expect a hard battle with reigning American world champion Connor Baxter, while the race between Weidert and Daniel Parres is certain to be a final day highlight.

The last day of competition at Pattaya will begin at 830am.
