Belarus took to the top step of the podium twice, and rising-star Martin Fuksa (CZE, C1M) doubled as the first batch of medals where awarded at the Olympic tester, the Aquece Rio International Canoe Sprint Challenge.

Artsem Kozyr (C1M 200m) and Volha Khudzenka (K1W 500m) each grabbed gold for Belarus, underlining their nations continued surge toward the top of the sport.

It's been a golden few weeks for Kozyr who was crowned world champion in Milan shortly before he travelled to Rio.

Another who is on the rise is the Czech Republic's Fuska; he managed to hold off a strong challenge from Sebastian Brendel (GER), the 2012 Olympic Champion, to secure gold in the C1M 1000m.

The 22-year-old then went on to take third place over the shorter 200m dash, underlining his potential to match the best over any distance.

Elsewhere, Portugal's Fernando Pimenta edged ahead of a high-class K1M 1000m line-up to reach the top step.

He was followed by the current and former world champions, Rene Holten Poulsen (DEN, silver) and Max Hoff (GER, bronze).

The Hungarian duo of Gabriella Szabo and Danuta Kozak showed their class in the K2W 500m as they overhauled Germany's Franziska Weber and Tina Dietze

Ronald Rauhe and Tom Liebscher (GER) collected their nations fourth medal of the day - but surprisingly only gold - as they made up for their disappointment in Milan where they finished sixth.
