Argentina racked up 24 golds in a 49-strong medal haul at the Pan American Canoe Sprint Championships in Asuncion, Paraguay. 

Agustin Vernice was among the gold medallists for Argentina as he captured the men’s kayak single 1000m crown. 

He was also in the Argentine team that won the men’s kayak four 500m title and linked up with Brenda Rojas to seal mixed kayak double 200m gold. 

That was one of Rojas’ seven titles in Asuncion as she also triumphed in the women’s K1 200m, women’s K1 500m, women’s K4 200m, women’s K4 500m and women’s K4 1000m and women’s K2 500m along with Maria Magdalena Garro. 

The second most successful nation was Chile with 15 golds, 14 silvers and 14 bronzes followed by Uruguay which secured seven golds, eight silvers and 11 bronzes. 

Three-time world champion Maria Mailliard starred for Chile in Asuncion, powering to the women’s C1 500m and women’s C1 1000m titles and joining forces with Sley Figueroa to clinch the women’s canoe double 200m crown. 

Matias Otero delivered for Uruguay, overcoming Vernice to strike gold in the men’s K1 500m before helping his nation to the men’s K4 200m title. 

He also teamed up with Julian Cabrera to secure top spot in the men’s K2 1000m final and formed a successful partnership with Santiago Melo, winning gold in both the men’s K2 200m and men’s K2 500m.

Paralympic champion Katherinne Wollermann was among the winners as Chile starred at the Pan American Paracanoe Championships. 

The Chilean team topped the medals table with a dominant display from their paddlers in Asuncion, Paraguay. 

As well as Wollermann’s victory in the women’s KL1, Jocelyn Munoz delivered gold for Chile in the women’s VL1, Fernanda Molina captured the women’s VL2 title and Aejandra Olivares claimed the women’s VL3 crown. 

There was more success in Chile in the men’s events, with Vincente Gonzalez triumphing in the VL2 and Victor Astudillo emerging victorious in the KL3. 

Argentina also had reason to celebrate as Ariel Atamanuk came away from Asuncion with two gold medals. 

Atamanuk sealed the men’s VL3 and men’s VL2 titles courtesy of two impressive performances. 

Argentina’s other gold came in the women’s KL3 after Katya Unrein came out on top.
