About  

Bridgitte Hartley has been the International Canoe Federation’s Athletes’ Committee Chair since 2022.  

The South African became the first paddler from Africa to win an Olympic medal in Canoe Sprint, when she claimed bronze in the women’s kayak single 500m.  

A multiple world medallist, she played a crucial role in ensuring that the athletes’ declaration was adopted during the 2022 ICF Congress.  

She has also been involved with the ICF’s Talent Identification Programme and is on the International Olympic Committee’s Women in Sport High Performance Pathway (WISH) leadership programme. 

Hartley was instrumental in ensuring that the athletes' declaration was adopted during the 2022 ICF Congress. 

The 40-year-old was also part of the ICF’s Talent Identification Programme, coaching athletes at last year’s Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Auronzo, Italy.

Sports practised  

Hartley represented South Africa in Canoe Sprint at Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.  

Apart from the bronze at London 2012, she won bronze medals in the K1 1000m in 2009 and 2018 and in K1 500m in 2014.  

She is a multiple African Games champion and has also medalled at ICF World Cups.
