Van Koeverden happy to allow changing of K1 Men 1000m guard

Decorated Canadian sprint canoeist Adam van Koeverden closed the door on his Olympic career in Rio on Tuesday, chuffed he had won his last ever race, and happy to be witnessing a changing of the guard in the men’s K1 1000.

34-year-old van Koeverden won the B final of the K1 1000, and walks away with the full collection of Olympic medals – a gold and bronze from Athens, and silver medals from Beijing and London.

Canoeing family in mourning after tragic death of German coach Stefan Henze

The International canoeing community is shocked and deeply saddened by the death of Olympic silver medallist and German slalom coach Stefan Henze.

Henze succumbed on Monday to injuries he sustained in a car accident in Rio on Friday morning.

His family were beside him when he died.

German Canoe Federation President, Thomas Konietzko, said the death will leave an enormous hole in German canoeing.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Marcus WALZ (ESP) was a surprise winner in a day of tight racing at Lagoa Stadium on Tuesday.

Fernando PIMENTA (POR) set the early pace in the final of the men's kayak single 1000m, leading at the first two timing points. With 250m to go Murray STEWART (AUS) had moved into first place with Roman ANOSHKIN (RUS) in second.

Canoe sprint champions cruise through on blistering first day

RIO DE JANEIRO - Under a baking sun at the Lagoa Stadium the first canoe sprint races of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games got underway on Monday, with Olympic champions Sebastian BRENDEL (GER) and Lisa CARRINGTON (NZL) both progressing to their respective finals.

BRENDEL won his men's canoe single (C1) 1000m heat comfortably and CARRINGTON recorded the fastest semifinal time in the women's kayak single (K1) 200m.

There’s a lot of hype and excitement surrounding an Olympics debut, but for Australian young guns Alyssa Bull and Alyce Burnett it’s all been a bit of a stroll in the park so far.
