Central African Republic has become the newest member of the International Canoe Federation following a vote at its Congress in Antalya, Turkiye.
The ICF Congress voted unanimously in favour of the African nation’s membership application on Thursday.
The decision increases the ICF’s membership to 171, with Central African Republic becoming the 39th member from the African continent.
Joao Manual Da Costa Alegre Afonso, President of the Confederation of African Canoeing, who is a member of the ICF Executive Committee, has welcomed the decision.
“The President of the National Olympic Committee told me about the possibility of starting the development of canoeing in his country,” said Mr Afonso.
“I visited this country and they are now a member of the canoeing family after today's vote.
“We now need to support the new federation to have more athletes in Africa.
“Africa is the young continent so we need to support athletes to practice the sport. This is very important.”
