Poland’s Klaudia Zwolinska raised her hands in triumph, beaming with joy as she finished her run in the women’s kayak final at Paris 2024.

In utter disbelief at her achievement, the 25-year-old’s smile only grew wider as the final results were confirmed, marking a significant milestone for Poland.

By winning the silver medal in the women’s kayak final, Zwolinska had more than one reason to be proud.

She not only opened Poland’s Olympic medal account in the French capital, but also secured the first Olympic Canoe Slalom medal for her country in 24 years.

The last time Poland won a medal in this event was when Krzysztof Kolomanski and Michal Staniszewski claimed silver in the C2 at Sydney 2000.

Zwolinska’s podium finish comes as no surprise, given her consistent top-level performances, including at last year’s World Championships.

Reflecting on her victory, Zwolinska said: “I am really happy and proud to open (the medal count) for the Polish team. A first medal for the country is special.

“I spent a lot of time preparing for this competition. My nation was cheering and strongly believed in me,” she said.

“After 24 years, a medal in slalom again for Poland. But the competition is still going on, so I need to deal with my emotions and let go of today.

“From tomorrow, I can start to prepare for C1 and then kayak cross, because I represent Poland and want to be sure I gave 100 per cent.”

The moment was extra special for Zwolinska, who had her family cheering for her from the stands.

She shared a warm embrace with her emotional brother Pavel, who said: “I don’t know how to deal with these emotions.”

“This is the happiest day of my life. I am sure that she will be able to bring more success for the country.”
