Development Programme
An important part of the International Canoe Federation’s global vision is its development programme, with a blueprint to introduce canoeing to new communities and assist in the sport’s growth in developing countries.
The ICF’s programme has access to world-class, experienced coaches, and also benefits from the generous support of several of the federation’s equipment sponsors. Although officially the TIP camps kicked off after the Rio Olympics, the ICF had been working for many years previously, utilising some of the most respected experts in the sport, to develop canoeing around the globe.
Successful development camps have been conducted development in Africa, Asia, South America and Europe.
The ICF works with the continental associations to run the programs, tapping into their valuable local talent and expertise to ensure the best possible results for all who take part.
One of the keys to the success of the ICF programme is the emphasis on getting participants to give back to the project. Previous graduates have gone on to run their own coaching courses, assist in boat and course development and have helped in administration.
The ICF development programme covers several canoeing disciplines, including Canoe Slalom, Canoe Sprint, Wildwater Canoeing, Canoe Marathon and Paracanoe. Participants from the programme competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, and more are expected to appear at Paris 2024.
