ECA PRESS RELEASE: The 2016 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships in Bulgaria has come to an end with another dominant performance by the Russian representatives who picked up eight gold, one silver and five bronze medals in Sunday’s 1000 and 200 metres finals.
The last day of the championships 22 countries won at least a medal. Russia has been the most successful one, yet Belarus, Hungary, Czech Republic, Serbia, Ukraine and Romania also won several medals to conclude this Canoe Sprint European Championships in style.
Aleksandr Tutaev (RUS) has had an amazing week in Plovdiv becoming a junior C1 European Champion in all three distances. First he picked up a gold medal in 500 metres final on Friday and on Sunday enriched his medals collection with additional two gold medals in C1 men junior 1000 and 200 metres finals. Both finals of the last competition day have been very tight. In 1000m final he was only 0.296 seconds ahead of Catalin Chirila (ROU), while in the 200 metres final he won only by 0.012 seconds. Murman Malania of Georgia won silver and Serhii Nahorhyi (UKR) bronze medal. In the 1000 metres final Stefanos Dimopoulos picked up bronze medal for Greece.
Vladislav Chebotar (RUS) had a good weekend too, adding gold medal from the C1M U23 1000 metres final to his European Champion title from the 500 metres final. Yurii Vandiuk (UKR) was second, just behind Chebotar in both events, and Tim Hecker (GER) picked up bronze in 1000 metres final. Lars Ullvang of Norway, reigning U23 500 metres European Champion, finished third in the 1000 meters final, behind Ihar Baicheuski (BLR) and Jakub Spicar (CZE). Aliaksandra Cryshyna (BLR) produced the fastest time in women’s 1000 metres final, to finish the race ahead of Dora Bodonyi (HUN) and Florentina Caminescu (ROU).
Rasmus Knudsen (DEN) was the fastest in men’s K1 junior 1000 metres final, crossing the finish line before Marton Gecse (HUN) and Viktor Raevnev (RUS). Sofie Kinclova won gold medal for Czech Republic in women’s K1 junior 1000 metres final. Laura Plesca (ROU) was second and Liudmyla Kuklinovska (UKR) third.
Oleg Gusev (RUS) was the fastest in men’s U23 K1 200 metres event, followed by Deniss Volkovs (LAT) and Dzimitry Tratsiakov (BLR). Dominika Wlodarczyk (POL) is the new European champion in the U23 K1 women event, Hermien Peters (BEL) – 500 metres champion – was second and Emily Lewis (GBR) third. Vadim Korobov (LTU) stopped the clock with the fastest time in men’s C1 U23 200 metres final, Tiago Tavares won silver for Portugal and Zaza Nadiradze bronze for Georgia. Kamila Bobr (BLR) was the best in women’s C1 U23 200 metres final. Irina Andreeva (RUS), the defending champion and holder of the best European time at this distance from the year 2014, was second this time, while Liudmyla Luzan (UKR) picked up bronze medal.
Serbia celebrated a win in two junior 200 metres events. Biljana Relić has become European champion in women’s kayak final and Nikolina Mijusković in women’s canoe event. Liudmyla Kuklinovska (UKR) and Arina Anoshkina (RUS) joined Biljana Relić on the podium, while Nadzeya Makarchanka, defending champion, picked up silver and Eugenie Dorange (FRA) bronze medal in women’s C1 junior 200 metres final. Sergei Filin (RUS) won the men’s K1 junior final, Jeremy Leray (FRA) and Csaba Zalka (SVK) were just behind him.
Russian K4 (Aleksandr Sergeev, Maxim Spesivtsev, Oleg Siniavin, Vladislav Blintcov) was the fastest in men’s U23 1000 metres final, their compatriots Aliia Almakaeva and Daria Kharchenko won the women’s C2 junior 200 metres event and Sergei Filin – Andrei Shmyrov (RUS) were the best in men’s K2 junior 200 metres final. Belarus celebrated wins in men’s C2 junior 1000 metres final with Ryhor Maisiuk – Dzianis Vashcanka, women’s C2 U23 200 metres final with Daryna Pikuleva and Kamila Bobr as well as in men’s K4 junior 1000 metres event (Mikita Sanko, Uladizslau Sukhanosau, Stanislau Daineka, Ilya Fedarenka).
Luke Harding and Magnus Gregory (GBR) are the new K2 junior 1000 metres European Champions, Hungarians Lilla Banki and Virag Jenei won the women’s junior K2 1000 metres final, Tomaš Vesely and Radek Slouf (CZE) were the fastest in men’s K2 U23 1000 metres event, Ukrainian U23 men’s C2 Yurii Vandiuk – Andrii Rybachok set the fastest time in 1000 metres final. Carola Schmidt and Sarah Bruessler (GER) were the best in women’s U23 K2 1000 metres event, while Italian duo Michele Bertolini – Riccardo Spotti won gold medal in the last event of the championships – men’s K2 U23 200 metres final.
Next year the ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships will be organised in Belgrade, Serbia, from 22 to 25 June.
