More than 860 athletes from 37 countries have arrived in Belgrade, Serbia, for the 2017 European Canoe Association Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint Championships beginning on Thursday.
Europe’s best young canoe sprint athletes will compete on Ada Ciganlija between 22nd and 25th June 2017.
The official opening of the 2017 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships in Serbia will be held a day earlier, on Wednesday, 21st June 2017.
The European Canoe Sprint Championships, which will attract over 860 athletes from 37 countries in junior and U23 categories, will bring 213 races and 46 A finals. The names entered in the competition promise excellent and exciting events. Many of the competitors who will paddle in Belgrade already have rich experience from top level senior competitions, such as European and World Championships, World Cup races as well as Olympic Games.
Lithuania will have a strong contender for the medals in Henrikas Žustautas who won a gold medal in 2015 at the European Games in the C1M 200 metres event, and also won a medal at last year’s Senior European Championships in Moscow; Simo Boltić and Marko Dragosavljević will be one of the strongest hopes for medal in the Serbian team as they have already tasted the success at the senior European Championships in the previous seasons; Oleh Kukharyk (UKR), Francesca Laia (POR), and Nadzeya Makarchanka (BLR) are among a group of World Cup medal winners from this season looking to extend their form.
The competition part of the Championships will begin on Thursday (22nd June) with heats in 1000 metre and 500 metre events. On Friday we will see semi-finals in 500 and 1000 metre events, as well as heats in 200 metres. The first medals will be awarded on Saturday to the best athletes in the 1000 metre finals which are scheduled for the morning part of the programme. In the afternoon semi-finals in 200 metre races will follow. On Sunday the championships will close with all the finals in 500 and 200 metres events.
