Kayak cross was adapted to allow children from as young as six the opportunity to showcase their talent in Brazil.

Almost 200 participants ranging from ages six to 18 entered the junior category at the Brazilian Kayak Cross Championships in Tomazina.

Kayak cross is continuing to gain in popularity across the world after it made its Olympic debut at Paris 2024.

The event, which appeared on the international stage for the first time in 2015, sees paddlers slide off a ramp before going head-to-head on the water for top spot.

The Brazilian Canoe Confederation (CBCa) made changes to the kayak cross children’s competition, including inserting a small descent ramp with little space from the ground to the water. It was also held on flatwater.

CBCa President Rafael Girotto said it was an "historic moment" to feature the youngsters in the tournament.

“The beginners' race was phenomenal with 186 entries,” said Girotto.

“The kids put on a show on the adapted ramp.

“Everything was perfect.”

Denis Terezani, a supervisor for the CBCa, said: “The intention is for the race to be a laboratory of knowledge, while making it fun, so that the children can compete and be entertained at the same time.”

Among the young paddlers participating was Heitor, who competed in the under 10 beginner kayak category at just six years old.

His mother Rosana Camuzzi Grandis said: “He competed last year aged five and was the youngest.

“I take him to training every day and I really encourage him and his brother to shine.

“His bravery, determination and will come from his coach.”

Pedro Aversa, Heitor's coach, added: “The whole family is passionate about canoeing and this is passed down from father to son.

“At just six years old, he can do an entire track and paddle in easy currents.

“We hope that he continues with this passion to give us many joys.

“He's passionate about the sport.”
