Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet believes the Olympic venue for canoeing can inject “new energy” into the development of the sport.

The three-time Olympic champion in Canoe Slalom spoke exclusively to the International Canoe Federation during his visit to the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium today.

Built in 2019, the stadium is playing host to the Canoe Slalom and Canoe Sprint competitions during Paris 2024.

Fans have been flocking to Vaires-sur-Marne over the past three days to create an amazing atmosphere for paddlers.

Mr Estanguet, the former Vice President of the ICF, was among the packed crowd that watched home favourite Nicolas Gestin capture the men’s canoe title today.

When asked about the legacy of the venue, Estanguet said: “I think it is always important to have this big moment in the country to develop the sport.

“Definitely this venue will bring a good image of canoeing in France and hopefully it will give some ideas to kids to try to do canoeing.

“It is also a really the asset (to have a facilities for Canoe Slalom and Canoe Sprint) and the power of this venue to have such a big complex with many possibilities to start with canoeing on flatwater and whitewater,” said Mr Estanguet.

“There are also multiple channels to find a way to engage with different people and different levels.

“Now we have a very good tool here and it will become the biggest centre in France.

“For sure, it reminds me of my career.

“To be honest with you, in the last 10 years I have been a little bit busier working in global organisation but every time I can find a moment to be back with the canoeing family it is always big emotions.
