Reigning world champion Vanda Kiszli captured the women’s K1 short-distance crown on the first day of the International Canoe Federation Canoe Marathon World Cup in Brandenburg, Germany.
Kiszli was a class above the rest, crossing the finish line in 17:43.196 – 18 seconds quicker than nearest challenge Melissa Johnson of Great Britain.
Panna Sinko saw off fellow Hungarian Panna Csepe to seal the bronze medal.
Philip Knudsen of Denmark got the better of Portugal’s Jose Ramalho to clinch men’s K1 short distance gold.
A time of 15:43.881 saw Knudsen take the victory, finishing two seconds in front of Ramalho who claimed silver.
Sweden’s Joakim Lindberg completed the podium with bronze.
Olena Tsyhankova made the most of her Ukrainian teammate Liudmyla Babak’s absence to win women’s C1 short-distance gold.
With Babak not in the race, Tsyhankova seized her opportunity, triumphing in 21:08.141.
Annette Wehrmann of Germany finished 20 seconds behind Tsyhankova to take silver, while the bronze went to Poland’s Paulina Grzelkiewicz.
Mateusz Borgiel came out on top in a Polish one-two to secure men’s C1 short-distance gold, winning in 17:59.001.
Mateusz Zuchora clinched silver after overcoming Frenchman Thomas Dubois Dunilac who picked up bronze.
Germany emerged victorious from the mixed relay which made its debut as a demonstration event at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Cup.
Caroline Heuser, Caroline Fink, Philipp Fink and Jannis Werner came together to deliver gold for Germany in 23:29.105.
The race is made up of senior and junior paddlers and features four laps of a length of 1,200 metres.
A team consisting of paddlers from Germany, Hungary and Spain finished second with Denmark coming third.
