The International Canoe Federation visited Los Angeles this week to discuss the progress of preparations as anticipation builds for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

ICF President Thomas Konietzko met with LA28 Chief Operating Officer John Harper to talk about the scheduling of events, athlete accommodation during the Games, and key operational details among others.

The ICF delegation also included Vice President Lluis Rabaneda, Secretary General Richard Pettit, and Canoe Sprint Committee member Charles Lukman accompanied by LA28 Sports Director Niccolò Campriani.

A meeting took place at the LA28 office on Wilshire Boulevard, where the ICF leadership team was briefed on strategy and Games structure before visiting the Marine Stadium in Long Beach.

“Firstly, my sincere condolences to the city of LA which has experienced one of the worst wildfire disasters in history,” Mr Konietzko said.

“The coming together of first responders, citizens and all others shows the resilience and unity of this city and its community.

“The Olympic and Paralympic Games in three years’ time offers a symbol of hope, and we are pleased to hold Canoe Sprint competitions in one of the most beautiful venues in Long Beach.

“We have laid the foundations for our competitions with many discussions with the LA28 team."

After visiting the venue, a review of both disciplines was conducted, with Canoe Slalom events set to take place in Oklahoma City, pending approval by the LA City Council.

Discussions also took place around the revised qualification process the ICF will put forward to the International Olympic Commitee in the coming months.
