Jessica Fox of Australia proved why she is the best in business by winning the women’s canoe final to add to her kayak gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics Games.
Elena Lilik of Germany bagged silver and Evy Leibfarth of the United States claimed bronze, respectively.
Here are some quotes from the winners and others on day five of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Jessica Fox (Australia)
“I have never thought about those records. They have never felt attainable or even something that I could possibly dream about. Each Olympic experience has been very different, some have been brilliant and others have been a bit disappointing. This is just magical. To be named among some of Australia’s great champions in Olympic history, I can’t believe it. And in our sport it is very special to follow in the footsteps of Tony Estanguet and Michal Martikan as I grew up watching them. I’m also very proud to be doing it as a woman.”
Elena Lilik (Germany)
“It feels unreal and super exciting. The crowd was crazy. There were so many Germans here screaming my name, I got goosebumps. I was so happy with my run and so proud. I just went for it and had no fear. All of those emotions came out at the finish line. I have goosebumps. It felt so surreal. The whole crowd was shouting my name. I was like, 'What the fuck, where am I?’ To witness such an amazing crowd and so many Germans. I was really, really thankful.”
Evy Leibfarth (United States)
“I think it’s hard when all of the competitors are also your friends, so I want everyone to do really well as they are coming down. It means so much to all of us just to be here. We’re all so proud to be in the final. It was just a crazy feeling to know I could get a medal, and I think I just started ugly crying.”
Klaudia Zwolinska (Poland)
“I’m really disappointed today. Even though I have a medal (silver) from the kayak one (single), which is really positive, now I feel a little bit sad and disappointed. It’s OK. I need to learn, and spend more time, and prepare for the next competition. The course was really tricky. The girls made a lot of mistakes, and my mistake was huge on the technical part of the course. It was really tricky, and I think the final will be interesting.”
Marjorie Delassus (France)
“I made too many mistakes on the run, and it wasn’t enough to be in the top 12. Obviously, I’m super disappointed now, and I really wanted to have the opportunity to be in the final. Now I have to go back to training and come back better.nThe course is tricky, but it’s the same for every girl. I really wanted to find my best line, today it wasn’t the best way for me to paddle as I wanted to.”
Gabriela Satkova (Czechia)
“I honestly don't know, I thought I was going well. I touched the third gate but I wasn't distracted by that. I thought I had the rest of the run to catch up. I was feeling really good. That was the worst thing ever. I am so disappointed. I'm still very happy from the experience. I have some good memories and I am very grateful for that - it is just such an honour to be here.”
Mallory Franklin (Great Britain)
“A bit frustrated. I know I have the pace, but I've been struggling all year to put it all together and keep it clean and get a good delivery out. I was hoping I would be able to put it all together when it mattered, but I didn't and that's a bit sad. It's a tricky course. It’s technical and one that when I was a bit more in form I probably could have done well on, but it wasn't meant to be. It's a tough one to take. I think I was capable of taking a medal today, but it is what it is.”
