The second competition day of the 2017 ECA Junior&U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships brought races in all three competition distances - 200, 500 and 1000 metres. The finalists of 500 metres and 1000 metres are now known as well as the semi-finalists of the shortest distance.
The second day of championships in Belgrade started with semi-finals in 500 metres events, where favourites managed to secure themselves places in the finals which are scheduled for Sunday. Linnea Stensils (SWE) was the fastest semi-finalist in women’s U23 500 metres event, followed by Liudmyla Kuklinovska (UKR) and Sara Mihalik (HUN). The 2014 junior European championships silver medallist Rebeka Simon (GBR) produced the fourth fastest time and also got a place in the final A.
In men’s U23 500 metres event
Artuur Peters (BEL) won the semi-final to get into the second A final of the championships, and in men’s C1 semi-final Greek
Stefanos Dimopoulos (GRE), 2016 Junior European Champion in 1000 metres event, produced the fastest time.
In junior 500 metres semi-finals Hungarian paddlers Dora Gazso and
Dominik Zombori crossed the finish line with fastest time in K1W and C1M events.
Dmytro Danylenko (UKR) was the fastest junior in men’s K1 and
Irina Vikhruk (BLR) won the C1W semi-final. In K2, C2, K4 500 metres events crews from Denmark (K2W Junior; K4M Junior), Russia (K2W U23), Ukraine (K2M Junior, K4W Junior), Czech Republic (C2M Junior), Slovenia (K2M U23), Italy (C2M U23) and Bulgaria (K4M U23) set the fastest times.
The 1000 metres semi-finals followed quickly after the 500 metres events.
Adam Botek (SVK) was the fastest kayaker in men’s K1 U23 1000 metres semi-final,
Margaux Briswalter (FRA) was the best in women’s K1 U23 semi-final and
Grzegorz Szpynda (POL) won the C1M U23 1000 metres semi-final. In junior category Veselin Vulchov (BUL) stopped the clock with the fastest time,
David Barreiro (ESP) was the best in junior C1 1000 metres semi-final and
Helene Fabrin-Brasted (DEN) in K1W junior 1000 metres semi-final. Representatives of Germany, Czech Republic, Serbia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Romania and Russia were the fastest in K2M, C2M, K2W junior and U23 events and K4 junior semi-final.
The first medals of the 2017 ECA Junior&U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships will be awarded on Saturday morning, when we will see the finals in the 1000 metres events. After the break Saturday’s programme will continue at 15:00 with semi-finals in the 200 metres events.
